Conventional field testing techniques tor power transformers have been used for more than 80 years. Over time, new technologies and techniques have been developed, but in our industry, they are often adopted slowly over a long period of time. This paper will be a general introduction to the advanced diagnostic testing tools that have become recognized electrical techniques within the past 20 years, or so. The theory and analysis of these relatively new diagnostic tests will be discussed in order to gain an understanding of when they are most appropriately used in a transformer that warrants further investigation, and how to interpret the results to identify fault modes within a power transformer.
