We propose to employ a passive single microring resonator (MRR) for extending the modulation speed of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), which are configured as external modulators. The MRR efficiently acts as notch filter and compensates for the pattern-dependent distortion at the output of the electrically modulated SOA. By conducting numerical simulation, we specify a combination of feasible MRR radius and detuning which allows to achieve significant improvements on the performance of the SOA, at a data rate well beyond its limited modulation bandwidth.
