A study was conducted to see if soil properties, namely strength, could be improved by mixing highly organic, levee soils with local, naturally occurring pozzolans, in the form of volcanic ash, from the eruptions of Mt. Mazama. The results of this study are presented in this paper. These results include the suitability of the Mt. Mazama materials as a natural pozzolan, and strength testing of compacted soil samples mixed with various amounts of Mt. Mazama volcanic ash and other soil additives. Results indicate that in contrast to previous studies, the Mt. Mazama material does not improve soil strength without additional soil additives such as lime or fly ash. Mixtures of Mt. Mazama ash and lime improved soil strength to a higher degree than either fly ash or lime alone.
