In 2013, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) awarded the Loop 1604 Western extension design build project in San Antonio, TX. This project included testing for the design new pavement and improvement of existing pavement. Various non-destructive and destructive tests were performed during design, such as, falling weight deflectometer (FWD), pavement cores, laboratory resilient modulus, dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP), and other necessary laboratory tests. Green and sustainable innovations such as re-usage of existing aggregate base or retained/rehabilitate pavement sections were also explored. This provided savings on overall project cost and schedule. This paper will focus on the various testing procedures used on the project, challenges during design and during construction, quality control and ssurance (QA/QC), sustainable pavement design alternatives used and lessons learned during the process. The paper also presents the importance of team work and partnering with contractors.
