Natural cellulosic fibers are a crucial part of our daily lives and can be found in many products, especially in textiles used for clothing or interior applications. Flammability of these materials is limiting their applications in some products. This research has used plasma technology to deposit silicon based networks on cellulosic fabrics. The treated fabrics were tested for flammability with an automatic 45° angle flammability chamber. Statistical analysis was used to optimize the results. Control and treated samples were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Attenuated Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Durability to 50 laundering was studied. It was concluded that the plasma treatment used to crosslink silicon based species onto the fabrics increased the ignition time and improved resistance of fabrics to burning.
