Of late, there has been tremendous interest in the area of flame- retardant (FR) materials due to their numerous applications in clothing, construction, aviation and telecommunications. With the increasing stringent requirements on the fire safety of materials, searching for new flame-resistant polymers has attracted considerable research activity in recent years. Halogen-based flame-retardant polymers, until recently were a cost-effective solution to FR materials but are now banned due to the release of toxic gases. Thus, there exists the need to develop environmentally safe, economical polymers with efficient flame-retardant properties. The compatibility of the FR polymer/additive with fabric is important for military/civilian applications.
