Flushing water distribution network is a routine operation task for companies to ensure adequate water quality. This paper presents an optimization model, the extension of author's previous work on optimal hydrant selection for fire flushing, for selecting hydrants to flush water distribution pipes without valve operations. The method is formulated to search for a given number of hydrants and the corresponding hydrant flows. Each of the selected hydrants is flushed one by one, so that the total length of the cleaned pipes is maximized. An example system C-Town network is used to demonstrate the application of the optimized hydrant selection and hydrant flow for flushing water pipeline network.
