Analysis of Mission Planning Problem for Video Satellite Imaging with Variable Imaging Duration

The video satellite with the ability of active imaging is a new generation of earth observation satellite (EOS). The duration of each task varies. It can acquire the imaging picture of earth targets continuously during a time span, which is more capable for important target monitoring. However, the new capability brings new challenges to satellite imaging mission scheduling and makes the problem more complicated. In this paper, we study the video satellite mission planning problem and propose a dedicated method to calculate the imaging duration of each task. Based on a greedy algorithm, two types of tests are designed: the single test and the integral test. Both of which analyze the effects of variable imaging duration on the solution of the problem in detail. Then we summarize a series of useful heuristic knowledge and analyze the improvement of the algorithm considering those heuristic knowledges based on the comparative experiments.
