Negative DC Corona Discharge for Nitric Oxide Removal in Pin-To-Water Electrode Configuration

Due to its adverse impact on both the environment and human health, more rigorous regulation of the emission of nitric oxides is being enforced [1, 2]. Selective catalytic reduction is currently the most efficient method of emission reduction, but non-thermal plasma has also been researched extensively as a potential mitigating technology. In this paper, negative d.c. corona discharge was investigated for nitric oxide removal using pin-to-water electrode configuration. The pin electrode was surrounded by a thin glass tube used as the gas outlet, in order to maximize the contact time between the generated plasma and the nitric oxide. Water vapor produced from the water surface plays a crucial role for nitric oxide removal, due to the formation of reactive species, including OH radicals.
