Improved Modelling for Wind Turbines on Trains

Most wind powered electricity generation systems are stationary and heavily dependent on the force and direction of the wind. Alternatively, the wind displaced by fast moving vehicles, in particular by trains is routinely available in locations worldwide. Previous research has been solely aimed at designing wind turbine models that maximize the output potential of the system. This work aims to develop a more realistic model of the phenomenon which includes the inherent drawbacks of the system as well as some potential solutions. Extensive simulations have been performed to explore the air drag influence of wind turbines on moving train and to estimate the power generation capabilities of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based wind turbine system. The proposed improved model provides simulation accuracy and additional opportunities for real-time analysis of the moving trains.
