All OCC facilities should be capable of achieving 90-93% yield. In many cases, substantial improvements can be made for a small capital investment. Systems that are performing with yields below 90% should be studied to determine where the yield losses are occurring and to determine the best approach for optimization. In many cases and especially in mills with older systems however, the desire to spend money to optimize these systems becomes a low priority when the mill has other projects with more pressing capital spending needs. It should be stressed however, that opportunities in these systems are very real and if a system is operating at low yields, it is well worth the time to study the system and determine the scope and capital cost requirements to bring the system up to today's operating standards.
