PLINIUS-2: A versatile platform for severe accident mitigation device and simulation assessments

CEA has started the design studies of a new large-scale facility to extend the European PLINIUS experimental platform devoted to corium behavior during Severe Accidents. Thanks to its innovative design, this new versatile facility, called PLINIUS-2, will handle both water and sodium coolant in separate halls covering severe accident R&D needs of existing reactors, new light water reactors and Gen 4 design such as the SFR and GFR. The paper presents the design of the facility and the technical innovations of the experimental devices focusing on the ASTRID severe accident assessment program.
