This paper proposes an analysis of the phenomena of stability of synchronous machine under small perturbation by examining the case of a single machine connected to a large system through external impedance. The proposed method uses robust Hco loop shaping technique to design the power system stabilizer. The conventional power system stabilizer (CPSS) is basically bound to a particular operating state. The performance of conventional power system stabilizer degrades as the operating point changes. For that case Robust power system stabilizer(RPSS) will be the better solution. The RPSS is designed using the concept of Glover-McFarlane's loop shaping design procedure for a single machine infinite bus system. The resulting Robust power system stabilizer ensures the stability for a set of perturb operating points with respect to the nominal system and has good oscillation damping ability. In this paper a comparison is made between the design of CPSS and RPSS.
