摘要

An overview of the diagnostic process for a tooth with a propagating crack on a gear element from the mechanical defect, to the defect signature, to the detection process is presented. The detection process applies the diagnostic indicator FM4. FM4 is one measure of mechanical component health for gears that has been extensively covered in the literature. This paper presents an alternative interpretation of the FM4 indicator that results in the same analytical form. The work presented is demonstrated with a simple numerical simulation and the results of a seeded fault experiment on a helicopter gearbox.
