Information exchange is the key to sharing information among subsystems of a railway bureau. To achieve this, most applications adopt an open-access database to share data, and adopt the structure of a Browser/Server (B/S) for simple and easy application development. Because the subsystems are independent of each other, in order to keep a subsystem safe, it should avoid connection with a third of the other units; also, those subsystems that share applications are limited. However, the B/S structure often causes jamming in the network jammed. To solve this problem, a set of data formats and data-exchange protocols have been defined. The data formats are normalized to make users understand each other. No matter what the format of the original information, the information must be transferred to a correct format. The data-exchange protocols are defined based on TCP/IP protocol, and the connection between the information provider and the user is setup by a socket. Then, the data are exchanged through this connection and shared among the subsystems, instead of being browsed in the B/S structure. Because these protocols only exchange defined data and not applications, they are safer than B/S applications. To verify the feasibility of the protocols and data formats for information-exchange applications, a multi-layer network was adopted to perform these applications. Tests have indicated that this network can work well to exchange data among applications. It especially can achieve good performance in network communications.
