摘要

This study suggests that accounting for changes in collagen fiber configuration significantly impacts theoretical predictions of pressure-induced arterial remodeling outcomes, while accounting for changes in the mass fractions of structural constituents has comparatively minimal influence. Flow-induced remodeling outcomes were relatively insensitive to both examined factors. In the absence of relevant experimental data, we assumed that remodeling resulted in identical production and changes in configuration for all collagen fibers. However, the orientations of the fibers with respect to the longitudinal tissue axis imply differential contributions to load-bearing, which suggests that remodeling-induced property changes might be fiber-specific. There is a need of additional experimental studies that can promote further identification of the plausible scenarios of arterial remodeling and serve as a basis for building increasingly reliable mathematical models.
