Human Powered Vehicles (HPVs) are one of the evolving concepts for today's urban transportation especially for the short distance daily usage. The major reasons behind this evolution are the advantages of HPV applications in the sense of price, efficiency and environmental concerns. This paper presents preliminary Hardware in the Loop (HiL) testing results of a HPV combined with electric motor via series-parallel powertrain which is named as Human Electric Hybrid (HEH) vehicle. The mechanical overview of the powertrain components, the explanations of the HEH vehicle operating modes and the torque control algorithm are discussed. The HiL testing results introduced in this paper are obtained with the usage of a full-sized ETAS HiL simulator employed in order to provide an effective testing platform by increasing the comprehensiveness of the plant to be controlled. The HiL experimental results reveal that the series-parallel hybrid powertrain architecture increases the efficiency and the human contribution over a drive cycle.
