ANALYSIS OF RIVER FLOW REGIME CHANGES RELATED TO WATER AVAILABILITY ON KAPUAS RIVER, INDONESIA

The rivers are major sources of fresh water, which is a basic need of the society.Theavailability of water is affected by watershed characteristics such as rainfall and land covertypes. Along with population and economy growth, there has been a change in land use thatleads to changes in land cover types, there by changing the river fl ow regime and affecting theavailability of water in the river. So, it is necessary to analyze water fl ow regime changes in theriver to determine water availability to plan for action in the future. Studies on these aspectswere conducted in the Kapuas watershed with catchment area of about 100.284 km2, WestKalimantan, Indonesia.The study was conducted by analyzing the trend of annual rainfall and change of land coverduring the last 3 decade, analyze land cover types and compare the availability of water in theKapuas river from measurements results in 2002 and 2012.
