The capital investment in a marine construction vessel requires a number of decisions to be made in regardto the target market and technical capability of the vessel.Given the uncertain demand and breadth of the offshore market over the 20-year horizon for which avessel is typically designed there is no certain answer only a range of answers.To make investment decisions of such complex nature, modeling of the market and vessel characteristiccapacities can be used to provide investment sensitivity results.The paper will present how construction market data of past and future work is used to assess themarket utilization and capability of a construction vessel of a given set of characteristics.The assessment is done using algorithms which allow a large volume of market data to be evaluated.The modeling tool can be used to predict supply and demand and available market share for a givenclass of vessel and given set of market data.This paper will discuss how the modeling techniques were employed to arrive at the business decisionto invest in a Derrick Lay Vessel and a Reel Ship how the final technical specification was determined.
