There are a multitude of different pigments, binders and additives that are used to formulate paper coatings. Reducing the levels of expensive pigments like TiO_2 is a constant driver for coated paperboard producers. However, finding the balance between cost and performance can be difficult. In this study, a Design of Experiment approach was taken with a new TiO_2 replacement pigment to achieve significant cost savings without sacrificing performance of the final coated board. A co-calcined clay with TiO_2 was used to reduce TiO_2 and show equivalent performance cost effectively. The final coated board brightness was used to model the input parameters as predictors of performance. The model, so developed, can be a useful tool for coated paperboard manufacturers to optimize their formulations by selecting formulation inputs to obtain desirable performance and cost.
