The Structure of Art

The design of structures deals in the laws of physics, principles of logic, and analytical problem-solving and focuses primarily on function in the support of buildings and bridges. The world of art, on the other hand, is often associated with the architectural side of the built industry, and focuses on form and aesthetics. Structures and art are not typically linked, and there is not always an appreciation for an artworks' structural requirements, especially of large public pieces. When structural support is integral to a piece, the detail and elegance of the structure are often overlooked, and the work involved can go unappreciated. This paper and presentation will feature some of the challenges of designing structural support for three-dimensional art that appears to defy the laws of physics. Projects featured include a sampling of free-standing structural art pieces as well as the design challenges they posed. This presentation will be of interest to all structural engineers, especially those with little or no experience designing atypical and unusual projects.
