It is often said that it is difficult to prove directly that microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is the cause of failure. Rather, it is through the process of eliminating other corrosion mechanisms that MIC can be identified. This paper presents the failure analysis of leaks on a CO_2 gathering pipeline that concluded that microbiologically influenced corrosion was the primary failure mechanism. The challenges of MIC control and lessons learned are presented.
