Results of eye lens dose measurements for interventional cardiology staff

Interventional cardiology procedures are associated with high patient and staff dose levels. The purpose of this paper is to assess dose levels in terms of Hp(3) for different categories of staff working in interventional cardiology suite and to perform parallel patient dose assessment to correlate eye lens dose levels with relevant patient dose indices. Patient doses were assessed in terms of kerma-area product (PKA) and cumulative air kerma in interventional reference pint (KIRP). Ocular lens doses to staff members were assess using a calibrated active personal dosimeter calibrated in terms of personal dose equivalent at a depth of 3mm, Hp(3). In the position occupied by interventional cardiologist (first operator) men eye lens dose per procedure was 71 μSv and 141 μSv for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, respectively. For the second operator or nurse, corresponding ocular doses were 33 μSv and 34 μSv and for radiographer dose levels were 3.9 μSv and 19 μSv for diagnostic and therapeutic procedure, respectively. Estimated mean values of ocular doses per unit PKA for first operator, second operator or nurse and radiographer are 1μSv/Gycm2 , 0.34 μSv/Gycm2 and 0.16 μSv/Gycm2, respectively. If eye dosimeters are not available, approximate dose assessment can be done using these relationships for the particular position and particular unit.
