All these data finally show, now unambiguously, that optical losses in Ce:LLF and Ce:YLF are predominantly due to absorption of laser radiation by color centers which have been produced by UV laser pumping and not to ESA from the 5d emitting level of the Ce{sup}(3+) active ions into the conduction band of the crystals, these processes being more pronounced for σ than for π polarized light, probably due to the cristallo-graphic structure of the materials. More experimental details and a complete numerical modelisation of the gain and laser results will be reported at the conference.
