This paper attempts to solve the problem which is the groove defect detection of the pressure vessels. In order to solve this problem, the distribution of eddy current and the characteristics of heat transfer are analyzed. Base on pulsed eddy current thermal imaging, a thermal region separation algorithm is proposed. The thermal region separation algorithm includes the construction of the observation matrix, whitening process, separation of unrelated regions and regions merging. It is able to separate well the regions with different thermal responses. The results obtained in this paper can detect the groove defects in the pressure vessels. It can improve the safety, and reduce the risks as well as losses, which is of great significance.
