The multi-objective environmental/economic power dispatch (MOEED) problem owns a barrier that lots of constraints makes the solving become difficult. To overcome this difficulty, we propose an improved whale optimization algorithm (IWOA) to obtain the best compromise solution. The proposed IWOA algorithm can improve the shortcomings of the standard whale optimization algorithm (WOA). The WOA falls into local optimal frequently and has unstable optimization efficiency. A constrained handling method based on Pareto-dominant (CHMP) is proposed to solve inequality constraints. These strategies have been examined in IEEE 30node system and IEEE 57-node system. The research results reveal that the IWOA can settle the environmental economic dispatch problem of power system effectively.
