In this paper, we proposed a novel procedure to detect the calcification boundary and measure the calcification area in the tunica media coronary artery using an intravascular ultrasound image (IVUS). The calcification of interest is near the tunica intima region. This study used an Otsu threshold, a morphological operation and an empirical threshold in detecting the contour of the calcification, and hence the boundary. The data used in this study are from Training Set B of the MICCAI 2011 Challenge. The proposed method used is straightforward and easy to implement and obtained of 82% accuracy, 80% sensitivity and 84% specificity.
