SPATIAL CONCENTRATION AND CONNECTIVITY OF INTERNATIONAL PASSENGER TRAFFIC AT BRAZILIAN AIRPORTS

This paper analyses concentration and connectivity of scheduled international passengerair traffic in Brazil. The analysis;;performed for 1999 to 2012;;considers scheduledweekly seats and cities programmed by airlines in the period. The results show that theturn of the millennium was marked by concentration and reduced capillarity ininternational flights. This lasted through the first half of the 2000s;;the second halfmarked by a movement to recover capacity and connectivity. Liberalbilateralagreements;;which began to appear in 2002;;and increasingly from 2010;;marked amove towards the “open skies” concept;;assisting the process of operationaldeconcentration and increasing seat supply. The government’s liberalisation policythrough bilateral agreements did not cause a significant turnaround for national airlines;;rather growth was led by foreign airlines. This movement brought significant changes inthe composition of international passenger traffic. Internationalpassenger traffic inBrazil changedlittle in terms of concentration and connectivity. What really changedwere the dominance of foreign airlines and seat distribution by Airports CouncilInternational regional market;;with the Latin America and Caribbean region tending toshrink to less than half of the market.
