It is shown that the method of steps for linear delay-differential equation can be formally used to find an infinite-dimensional linear map whose stability is equivalent to that of the delay equation. The truncated map can be used to estimate the spectrum of the discrete version of the evolution semigroup associated with the continuous equation. The method provides an efficient way to numerically determine stability regions in parameter space.
