The Honore-Mercier Bridge, one of Montreal's largest, oldest, and most utilized structures, is severely deteriorated and currently undergoing restoration. As the largest bridge rehabilitation project ever undertaken in Canada, an investigation into necessary reparations was completed. The superstructure of one span of the provincially owned portion of the bridge was selected for representation and analyzed. The span was modeled, using original drawings of the bridge, and analyzed with an integrated software program for structural analysis. Forces were determined for each member in the steel truss configuration, based on applied loads according to CAN/CSA-S6-06. The steel truss superstructure was inspected, and an associated section loss incorporated into the capacity of each member, in order to reflect current conditions. An appropriate steel reinforcement design method was then proposed. Recommendations are based on current design code standards, as well as industrial practices.
