Conceptually, mercury control by injection of activated carbon is simple. However, the difference between a smoothly operating plant and daily unpleasant surprises lies in the details of implementation. These details are learned through living with first-generation design. Our industry is now embarking upon the second generation of design for Activated Carbon Injection (ACI). To achieve the desired operability and maintainability in the second generation, we must pay attention to the lessons available from operation of the early ACI units. CPS Energy and Sargent & Lundy have reviewed the experiences with many operating ACI systems. This paper discusses Lessons Learned that are being incorporated into the design of the ACI systems for Spruce Units 1 and 2.
