The NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) will replace and upgrade the current U.S. civilian polar-orbiting environmental satellite system providing the afternoon orbit spacecraft, instruments and ground system components. The ground system, known as the 'Common Ground System (CGS)' consists of a Command, Control, and Communications Segment (C3S) and an Interface Data Processing Segment (IDPS) both developed by Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems (IIS). The C3S currently flies the Suomi NPP satellite and routes mission data to U.S. ground facilities. One of the key features of the JPSS CGS is its C3S global data-delivery system consisting of receptor antennas and a communications network which allow for the unprecedented rapid collection and routing of large volumes of polar-orbiting environmental satellite data for multiple missions. A vital component and capability of this system is the McMurdo Multimission Communications System (MMCS). This presentation will review the MMCS concept of operations, architecture, ground components, facilities, organizations, present and future supported missions, and data monitoring, distribution, separation, shaping and prioritization. These capabilities make the Raytheon built JPSS CGS one of the few multi-mission ground solutions in the world.
