Over the past ten years sustainability has become a hot topic and buzz word in the transportation industry. Terms like "LEED", "triple bottom line", "green", "climate change", "carbon footprint", "carbon neutral" and "sustainable" have begun to enter into the vocabulary of the transportation professional. The topic of sustainability has become important enough to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) that they have developed a standalone website dedicated to sustainability in transportation.
