Water Extraction in Natural Hydraulic Lime Based Mortar

This study lies in the field of mortars for masonry. The effect of flow of natural hydraulic lime NHL mortar and thickness of bed brick on extraction of water from bed to brick were investigated. The work was carried out through three steps; Step (1), Sorptivity test was conducted for two types of bricks on the number of 30 for each to select 9 bricks from each type. Step (2), Mortar used in the experiment was designed by using two types of lime with different density (NHLA and NHLB) and two types of sand with different porosity (Binnegar and Allerton Park) and relation between water: pined ratios w/p and flow were defined. Then four mixes by using Binnegar sand were chosen at flow 17, 20 cm to give mixes (NHLA 17cm, NHLA 20cm, NHLB 17cm, NHLB 20cm). Step (3), Twelve extraction water experiments have been conducted on bed mortar at thickness of 10, 20 mm as follows: (NHLA 17cm 10mm, NHLA 20cm 20mm, NHLB 17cm 10mm, NHLB 17cm 20mm, NHLB 20cm 10mm, NHLB 20cm, 20mm ) for both AR and LY bricks. The capillary extraction test for bed mortar brick was measured at root times 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 minutes of age, through a methodology described in this work. The effects of mortar flow, bed thickness and type of lime, sand in mortar and brick on sorptivity and capillary extraction were studied and results indicated that water extraction from bed mortar to brick be a simple and reliable measurement for masonry units.
