Hydraulic lime mortars (HLM) are used in repair of the heritage stone masonry structures in Canada that lie in seismically sensitive zones. The purpose of this research project is to study the compressive, flexural and direct shear toughness of plain and polypropylene micro-fibre reinforced HLMs (with fibre content of 0.25 % and 0.50 % volume fraction) to evaluate the post-crack response under variable loading rates. The results help to identify a tougher and more durable mortar to offer the best repointing binder. Fibres were effective in increasing the flexural toughness as well as the shear strength and the mortar was found to be weakest in flexure (Mode I). The study shows that plain and fibre reinforced HLM are more sensitive to high strain rates than fibre reinforced Portland cement-based mortar and concrete. Also, Mode I fracture toughness of HLM was more sensitive to strain rate than its modulus of rupture.
