High Service Temperature Characteristics of Asphalt Binders and Paving Mixes

Sustainable pavement infrastructure with long service life and less maintenance and rehabilitation cost are preferred and hence the need and demand for high quality asphalt binders and mixes are increasing. This paper focused on the high temperature behavior of asphalt binders and mixes and the evaluation of rutting potential of these asphalt binders and mixes. Rheological behavior of asphalt binders was investigated in steady state viscosity measurement test. The difficulty of estimating the right values of the zero shear viscosities for modified asphalt binders was highlighted. The testing of asphalt mix behavior included wheel tracking test. The rutting potential of paving mixes was studied by using the wheel tracking test. The rate of rutting of asphalt mixes prepared with conventional asphalts correlates with the zero shear viscosity of the respective asphalt binders at the test temperatures, whereas the similar correlation was not possible to establish for tested modified asphalts and respective mixes. The laboratory experiments conducted under this study were also led to the development of some simple and easy to implement predictive model for rutting in asphalt pavements.
