Developing an Environmental Regulatory Register for Oil and Gas Operators Entering New Basins

Shale gas has become an increasingly important source of energy supply for the United States. With the introduction of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, this source of energy will continue to expand in the near future. As shale gas production continues to increase throughout the country, so will the related environmental requirements. Understanding these requirements requires a careful research and interpretation of policies and regulations. Therefore, maintaining a current knowledge of new and developing requirements will put operators in a better position to continue to expand operations while minimizing environmental impacts. A regulatory database fulfills this objective by providing one concise source of information for prior research and interpretation of the rules that apply to their operations.
