Spiral duct centrifuges as oil mist separators in crank case ventilation systems

In this study, we examine a new type of spiral duct centrifuge with multiple channels by means of CFD-simulations, which are validated with experimental data. We give a brief overview about possible duct geometries and problems in manufacturing them. We show that, while Dean vortices occur at all working points, they have negligible effects on the separation efficiency under certain conditions. Finally, we compare the separation efficiency to state of the art separation systems such as disc stack separators.
