A Comparative Study of Axial-Flux versus Radial-Flux Induction Machines

This paper presents the design process, detailed analysis, and a comparative study on the advantages of axial-flux induction machines (AFIM). A radial-flux induction machine (RFIM) is also studied as benchmark motor. Both motors are designed with six poles, 36 stator slots, and 32 rotor bars. Finite-element analysis is used to predict the performance of the two motors under both transient and steady state conditions. A complete comparative study along with the simulation results are reported. It is found that the studied AFIM has higher efficiency and power density.
