In marine propulsion applications, design of fault tolerant operation for an electric drive at a single point of failure is most essential. With respect to this aim, this paper presents fault tolerant capability of battery-assisted bidirectional quasi-Z-source inverter (BQ-ZSI) fed five-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine drive (PMSM). Initially, the performance of battery assisted BQ-ZSI under varying torque is examined with dc-link voltage boosting capability. Besides, the intrinsic advantage of proposed BQ-ZSI fault tolerant capability of the drive under open circuit fault and its impact on machine torque is studied in detail. To detect open circuit fault and its faulty phase, phase current average value is computed, and it is compared with measured average value of five-phase PMSM stator currents. To enable safe operation of drive under open circuit fault, current references are adjusted in field-oriented control strategy in accordance with its machine torque for interrupt free operation. The performance of proposed battery assisted BQ-ZSI fed five-phase PMSM drive under normal and fault tolerant operation is demonstrated in MATLAB 2019a simulation tool with 4.4 kW drive
