MATE's 2007 ROV Competition: Celebrating IPY by Challenging Students to Design and Build ROVs for Operation in Polar Environments

For the 2007 international ROV competition, the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center and the Marine Technology Society's ROV Committee issued students from around the world an icy challenge: design and build ROVs that can operate in the extreme conditions found at the Polar Regions. More than 1,500 students representing middle schools, high schools, home schools, community colleges, and universities from around the world stepped up to that challenge and, in the process, increased their understanding of polar environments and how they impact - and are impacted by - the global climate. The students also increased their knowledge of ocean-related career opportunities via the second annual Ocean Career Expo, held in conjunction with the international event.
