MODELING THE LOW VELOCITY IMPACT DAMAGE BEHAVIOR OF S-GLASS/PHENOLIC COMPOSITES

Modeling the impact damage behavior of composites requires a set of model properties andparameters to be determined for a progressive composite damage model in the explicit finiteelement analysis code, e.g., MAT162 in LS-DYNA. A set of orthotropic elastic and strengthproperties need to be determined from standard composite test methods and quasi-static punchshear test (QS-PST) methods. The properties thus determined then can be used to simulate lowvelocity impact (LVI) experiments to determine the damage parameters by matching theexperimental time history of impact-contact forces. In this paper, the orthotropic elastic andstrength properties of S-glass/phenolic composites have been obtained from Owens Corning'sinternal materials database. The punch shear strength (PSS) and crush strength (CS) have beendetermined by conducting QS-PST experiments. Model validating LVI experiments areconducted on S-glass/phenolic composite specimens provided by Owens Corning. A finiteelement model of the LVI experiments has been developed and is used in the parametricdetermination of damage and modeling parameters for the progressive composite damage model,MAT162. Detailed experimental and computational methodologies and results are presented.
