FILAMENT WINDING: PROCESS OVERVIEW NOVEL DEVELOPMENTS

Being a well-established composites production method, filament winding now faces therigorous need for costs reduction and higher production volumes. The reason for this lies in thefact that composites have currently entered the automotive sector. In this area, filament windingis not restricted to classical applications like pressure vessels and driveshaft elements anymore,but is also utilized for the production of various preforms (in their majority shapes withrotational symmetry).In this paper, an integral examination of the process is carried out. Issues like materials, machineconfiguration, mandrel geometry, (non-) geodesics, winding patterns, resulting structuralproperties and manufacturing process optimization are linked to each other by strategicallyselected parameters. Special emphasis is given to the involvement of state-of the art robotic cellsand added CNC manipulators. With a restriction to shells of revolution, a short process analysisis carried out to assess its possibilities and limitations in terms of speed, costs and reliability.
