Back-analysis is a procedure where the parameters of an analysis are determined to match predicted and measured results as closely as possible. Back-analysis usually use advanced numerical models, and as such is usually not carried out in routine geotechnical practice. This paper presents the development of a simplified procedure for probabilistic back-analysis of geotechnical parameters using a newly developed tunnel convergence model. The use of the proposed technique is demonstrated using idealized tunnel geometry and synthetically generated monitoring data. Finally, the performance of the proposed back-analysis procedure against a real case tunnel is demonstrated using a section of the Heshang Road Tunnel.
