The contribution of the collagen structure to the anisotropic response of the posterior human sclera was evaluated using finite element analysis. Compared to the mid-posterior sclera, the peripapillary sclera was highly anisotropic with a preferred circumferential direction and behaved more closely to a transverse isotropic tissue with fibers dispersed along the ee-direction. This information, combined with the thickness and deformation maps from inflation experiments done in our lab recently will be used to fit the distributed fiber constitutive model to the tissue's inflation response to generate representative material properties.
