Mitigating Short-lived Climate Pollutants from the Municipal Solid Waste Sector. The Climate and Clean Air Coalition Municipal Solid Waste Initiative

The municipal solid waste sector is a significant source of emissions of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) in many developing countries. SLCPs are a subset of greenhouse gases and aerosols that have relatively short atmospheric lifetimes compared to most greenhouse gases, and that have significant impacts on climate change and human health. The key SLCPs emitted from the municipal solid waste sector are methane and black carbon. Methane is produced through anaerobic digestion of organic matter in dumpsites and landfills; dumpsites and landfills represent the third-largest source of anthropogenic methane emissions globally. Black carbon is a byproduct of incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, biomass, and biofuels and is a component of fine particulate matter. Key sources of black carbon in the municipal solid waste sector include open burning of garbage, landfill and dumpsite fires, and waste collection fleets.Recognizing the significant potential benefits of reducing SLCP emissions and improving solid waste management in developing country cities, the Climate and Clean Air Coalition created a Waste Initiative to provide technical and capacity building assistance to municipalities around the world. This presentation will introduce the Waste Initiative and provide information on its objectives, activities to date, and the resources it provides to cities.
