With the use of inverse modeling applied to AERMOD, a mean hydrogen sulfide emission factor of 6.06 × 10~(-7) μg/s-m~2-kg was determined for large swine CAFOs. This factor was based on emission flux rates determined from inverse-modeling utilizing AERMOD and applied to four large swine CAFOs in north-central Iowa with animal weights supplied from a state permitting process, and lagoon and building dimensions determined by manual evaluation of aerial photographs. The emission factor derived in this study represents a value that can be applied to determine ambient hydrogen sulfide concentrations produced by swine CAFOs with the use of AERMOD, but should not be used to obtain an assessment of the actual emission rate.
