This paper presents a time domain analysis of faults with a primary arc in a power system. The mathematical method used in the analysis is on the basis of a state space technique. The dynamic arc equation and effects of soil resistivities on pole impedances are incorporated into the state space model. The system under the investigation is a distribution system of a Thailand electricity utility with concrete poles. The computer simulation using Scilab, an open source mathematical tool, is developed. It is found that the relationship between the arc current and the variation of the soil resistivities is in a nonlinear function.
