Target detection is a key part of underwater acoustic signal detection. The target noise may conclude signals with symmetric distribution, which the third-order statistics are blind to. A fourth-order statistic method is proposed to detect underwater target radiated noises. The detection statistic is based on the diagonal slice of fourth-order cumulant and is applied to detect simulated signal, ship model's noise and the real ship-radiated noise. The detection performance is compared with that of bispectrum method. The results indicate that the detection method based on fourth-order cumulant is better than that based on bispectrum and has a less computation burden.
