Use of Student-Created Videos to Enhance Undergraduate Learning

The use of undergraduate-created videos for geotechnical laboratory courseinstruction is described. Undergraduates filmed part of the experimental proceduresfor their labs and included the edited videos as part of their laboratory report. The useof videos tended to enhance student understanding. Student understanding isexamined, the level of student enjoyment of the laboratory increased and the noveltyof the exercise increased student involvement in the lab. The video program wasperformed at two universities. The creation of videos adds a new visual aspect to theinstructional experience, one of the several ways learning takes place. Experiencesmanaging the program, use of the hardware and editing software, evaluation, andgrading the exercises are described.
